No, hypnosis is not sleep. When you sleep, your conscious mind sleeps. In hypnosis your conscious mind is still functioning quietly in the background which is why 50% - 100% of those hypnotized hear and remember everything said to them during a session. The level of trance is dependent on the type of session. Hypnosis is a peaceful state of stillness. The hypnotic state is pleasant; you feel mentally very calm and content, relaxed, focused and alert. It is a form of deep mental and physical relaxation.
Anyone with over IQ of 70, have an open mind, the ability to concentrate, and the willingness to go into hypnosis can be hypnotized. The only people who cannot be hypnotized are those who are intoxicated or don't want to be hypnotized or having a fear of giving up control. Just remember that being hypnotized may not feel as you expect it to feel, but that does not mean that you are not in hypnosis.
Some therapists will touch you on the wrist, shoulder, neck, or forehead to test whether you are properly relaxed or to assist you into a deeper state of hypnosis. They should seek your permission first.
No, it is like coming out of a nap, you would simply open your eyes and feel more refreshed.
Yes, usually from about the age of six, provided they can understand what is being said, are intelligent and imaginative.
No, no, no… You will not do
anything that you do not think is acceptable. You cannot be 'made' to
violate your own values or accepted patterns of behavior. You would either
reject the suggestion or come out of the hypnotic state.
